Math Stations

This week in our Math classes we have been working on using the skills we learned on area and perimeter to solve hands on activities. Students were grouped together to work their way through a variety on tasks using different tools.

Using stations to expand our math skills allows students to take part in authentic learning experiences, they are collaborative and engaging, they are hands-on, they give students repeated practice with math concepts and allow for small group instruction. The use of centers helps to build a classroom culture that values student's strengths and encourages them to problem solve, discuss, and evaluate. By having students work independently and with groups they are given the chance to trust their own thinking and grow their confidence in Math.

This week centers included:

Measuring the area and perimeter of a variety of different rectangles which allowed students to strengthen their number sense and application of equations.

Using Lego's to solve a variety of perimeter equations and to create their own equations for classmates.

Tech Time - students watched videos in relation to solving for area and perimeter and conversion of different units. They then took that information to measure items around the room and convert them into different units of measurement.

Time with Teacher - We worked in small groups to learn new strategies in solving for area and perimeter, for example solving for both in irregular shapes.
